NERA will host an 11-mile paddle on the Coosawattee to the Oostanaula River in downtown Calhoun on Saturday, July 17.
The 5-hour paddle trip is suitable for beginner to experienced paddlers. The trip begins on the Coosawattee in Resaca and continues down the Oostanaula, passing by and over numerous historic sites, including several Native American fish weirs.
The V-shaped rock dams, which the area’s original inhabitants built 500 to 1000 years ago to capture fish, are still clearly visible today.
“This is a great trip for families,” McBee said. “It’s a relatively smooth trip and there is a great area for families to stop at and enjoy a picnic lunch.”
Each paddler will receive a map with points of interest, including the Battle of Resaca, Calhoun & Peacock Alley and Lay’s Ferry.
The trip is free to NERA members. Non members are charged $35 per family and receive a T-shirt and a year’s membership in NERA. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. A $5 shuttle fee is also charged for each vehicle.
NERA staff will lead the trip. To register, contact David Harrison, vice-president and paddle trip coordinator at dlbharrison@yahoo.com or call 770-547-2275.
NERA is a 501c3 non-profit organization with the mission of informing and empowering citizens so that they may become involved in the process of creating a cleaner, healthier, economically viable river basin.
